Family Sponsorship Canada
Reunite with Your Loved Ones
Canada’s immigration system values family unity. Through the Family Sponsorship program, Canadian citizens and permanent residents can sponsor their loved ones to immigrate to Canada and build a life together. This program plays a vital role in helping families stay connected and create a better future.
What Is Family Sponsorship?
The Family Class Sponsorship Program allows eligible Canadians and permanent residents to sponsor certain family members for permanent residence in Canada. Once approved, your family members can live, work, and study in Canada as permanent residents.
Who Can You Sponsor?
Under Canada’s family sponsorship program, you may be eligible to sponsor:
Spouse, Common-law, or Conjugal Partner
You can sponsor your partner if they are:
Legally married to you (spouse)
In a common-law relationship for at least 12 months
In a conjugal relationship (with significant attachment, but unable to live together due to external barriers)
Dependent Children
Children under the age of 22 who are not married or in a common-law relationship can be sponsored. In certain cases, children over 22 may also qualify if they depend on their parents due to a physical or mental condition.
Parents and Grandparents
The Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship Program (PGP) allows you to bring your parents or grandparents to Canada. This program is typically available by lottery or invitation through IRCC’s interest to sponsor process.
Other Relatives (Limited Cases)
You may sponsor certain other relatives, such as orphaned siblings, nieces, nephews, or grandchildren under 18 years of age, if they meet eligibility criteria. In rare situations, you can sponsor one extended family member if you have no other eligible relatives in Canada or abroad.
Sponsorship Eligibility Requirements
To sponsor a family member, you must:
Be at least 18 years old
Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or a registered Indian under the Canadian Indian Act
Reside in Canada (or intend to return to Canada once your sponsored relative arrives)
Demonstrate that you can financially support your sponsored family members and ensure they will not rely on social assistance
For parents and grandparents, you may need to meet Minimum Necessary Income (MNI) requirements and sign a longer financial undertaking.
Sponsorship Undertaking Periods
When you sponsor a family member, you commit to financially supporting them for a set period:
Spouses/partners: 3 years
Dependent children: 10 years or until age 25, whichever comes first
Parents/grandparents: 20 years
This legal undertaking remains in place even if your relationship changes or your financial situation shifts.
