A qualifying application submitted before status expires may allow the applicant to remain under maintained status while IRCC decides it.
Continued work or study depends on the application and circumstances.
A person applying for restoration may not work or study until the restoration and associated permit are approved.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it possible to extend a visitor record in Canada?
Yes. A visitor can request a longer authorized stay by applying for another visitor record before current status expires.
IRCC recommends applying at least 30 days before expiry. Approval is not automatic, and a visitor record does not renew a travel visa. Check the visitor-record requirements before applying.
Can I stay in Canada while my visitor record is being processed?
A visitor who submits a complete extension application before authorized status expires can generally remain in Canada until IRCC decides it.
That is maintained status. It does not itself authorize work or study. Follow IRCC’s instructions for a pending visitor extension, and review the next steps promptly if the application is returned or refused.
How much does it cost to extend your stay in Canada?
The government fee is $100 for a visitor extension, $150 for a study permit extension and $155 for a work permit extension.
An additional $100 open-work-permit-holder fee applies where required. Restoration and biometrics can involve separate charges. Check the current IRCC fee list; the firm’s professional fee is separate.
Can I leave Canada if I'm on maintained status?
You can leave Canada, but maintained status does not guarantee re-entry or continued work or study after returning.
For a regular work-permit extension still pending on return, IRCC says you cannot resume work until approval. Check the rules for travelling during a work-permit extension and the travel documents required for your circumstances.
Can I work on maintained status?
A timely, qualifying work-permit extension can allow continued work under maintained status. You must remain in Canada and follow the existing permit conditions.
An application for a visitor record or study permit does not extend a worker’s existing work authorization past its expiry. Review IRCC’s work-authorization rules before continuing or changing employment.
