Who is this service for

You may need proof of your landing record for a pension, citizenship application or another administrative matter. We help you establish which document will answer the request.

People missing an IMM 1000 or COPR

Your original Record of Landing or Confirmation of Permanent Residence is lost, damaged or unavailable. Another process asks for evidence of the historical record.

People needing a Verification of Status

A pension, citizenship, identification or administrative matter requires confirmation of the immigration record held by IRCC. It does not require a new permanent resident card.

People dealing with record errors

A name, date of birth or other detail may be wrong. The facts need review to distinguish an amendment request from a VOS request.

What Landing Document Replacement Application Support Includes

01

Confirm the document route

Distinguish a Verification of Status request from an amendment, PR card application, citizenship certificate request or access-to-information request.

02

Reconstruct the landing record

Gather available copies, passport information, client identifiers, landing details and later immigration documents that help identify the original record.

03

Review identity continuity

Compare names on entry with current names, as IMM 5009 requires. Use the passport number from entry, or the current passport number if that copy is unavailable. Link name changes or transliteration differences with supporting civil records.

04

Prepare the VOS request

Complete the agreed application and organize supporting evidence under the current IRCC instructions for verification or replacement immigration documents.

05

Assess amendment needs

Identify whether an immigration official recorded information incorrectly or personal details changed later. Guide 5218 treats these differently. Later personal changes generally do not alter a historical landing record; some other documents have a separate paid name or gender-change route.

06

Manage agreed IRCC follow-up

Review document requests or correspondence and prepare the additional work included in the written agreement.

The Mirzoyan Methodology

Six review stages organize the work on your file:

  • Risk Diagnosis: Identify eligibility concerns and the correct application route.

  • Evidence Mapping: Connect the required facts with the records that support them.

  • Document Verification: Check documents against the applicable instructions.

  • Consistency Audit: Compare travel dates, status periods, tax details and form histories.

  • Submission: Prepare the application for the permitted filing route.

  • IRCC Response Management: Handle follow-up included in the written agreement.

Document issues we check before submission

Historical document requests rely on identifiers that connect your current identity to the original landing record. See the national landing document page. IRCC returns an application without processing if a document required by the IMM 5009 checklist is missing.

Missing historical identifiers

Old passport numbers, client identifiers, landing dates and available document copies can help IRCC locate the record. Uncertain details should be identified, not guessed.

Name changes without a clear link

Marriage records, legal name-change documents or other civil evidence may be needed to connect the historical landing name with current identification.

Expecting a duplicate original COPR

A Verification of Status confirms information in the historical record. It is distinct from receiving another original Confirmation of Permanent Residence document.

Eligibility requirements at a glance

A Verification of Status document confirms information from an immigration record. It is not an exact replacement of an original Record of Landing or Confirmation of Permanent Residence. A request to amend an error uses a different process.

Basic Landing Document Replacement requirements
RequirementBasic requirement
Historical immigration recordThe request concerns a Canadian immigration record that IRCC can verify. Examples include an Immigrant Visa and Record of Landing or a Confirmation of Permanent Residence.
Verification rather than original copyIRCC issues a Verification of Status containing information from the historical record. The applicant should not describe the request as recovery of the original landing paper or an identical duplicate.
Record date and custodianIRCC handles records issued on or after 1936. Guide 5545 directs earlier records to Library and Archives Canada, and pre-1949 Newfoundland landing records to The Rooms.
Identity and record matchingThe applicant provides identity, immigration history and available record details, plus the supporting copies required by IMM 5009. IRCC uses these to locate and match the record.
Amendments use another processCorrecting an IRCC recording error on an IMM 1000, IMM 5292 or IMM 5688 uses form IMM 1436. Guide 5218 supplies the instructions. This differs from a standard VOS request or a later personal-information change.

Landing Document Replacement Fees and Processing Times

These are government charges in Canadian dollars. Professional fees and other application costs are separate.

Verify your status (VOS)$30 CAD per documentApplies to a Verification of Status request for an eligible immigration record.

The $30 CAD fee is for Verification of Status, not an exact duplicate of the original landing document. Guide 5545 lists limited fee exemptions for specified assistance recipients; confirm eligibility and payment instructions before filing.

Processing times

Check IRCC’s processing-time tool for Verification of Status or replacement of an immigration document, if listed. The estimate can change; locating a historical record depends on the information available.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get a verification of status in Canada?

Verification of Status timing depends on IRCC’s current processing queue and your application. Select the relevant document category in the processing-time tool; PR-card renewal estimates do not apply. Missing identifiers can slow record retrieval. If your original entry passport is unavailable, include your name at entry and follow IRCC’s instructions for alternative identification.

What if I lost my landing paper in Canada?

You can request a Verification of Status to confirm information from a lost landing record. IRCC issues historical information on plain paper, not a duplicate original. In your IMM 5009 request, identify any specific information you need, such as the original immigration category. A VOS cannot serve as a travel document or identity document.

Are CoPR and landing paper the same?

“Landing paper” is an informal name that may refer to an older Record of Landing or a later Confirmation of Permanent Residence. Check the form number: IMM 1000 identifies a Record of Landing; IMM 5292 and IMM 5688 identify COPR formats. A Verification of Status confirms historical information from these records without recreating the original document.

What are the requirements to complete the Verification of Status (VOS) or replacement of an immigration document (IMM 5009) application form?

Complete IMM 5009 with the requested identity and immigration details, then attach the identification, payment and translations required by Guide 5545. The checklist requires an accepted photo ID and a second accepted identity document. A school ID or SIN card is not accepted. Requesting a correction to a landing record uses the separate amendment process.

How much are IRCC fees?

IRCC charges depend on the service; a Verification of Status request currently costs $30 per document. Confirm the amount on IRCC’s fee list before submitting payment. This historical-record request is separate from PR-card renewal, a permanent resident travel document or a citizenship application. Professional assistance and other expenses are charged separately under the agreed service scope.
