Canadian Experience Class Canada
The Canadian Experience Class is an Express Entry program for skilled workers with eligible Canadian work experience. It can be a strong pathway to permanent residence.
The Canadian Experience Class, or CEC, is one of the programs managed through Express Entry. It is designed for people who have already gained qualifying work experience in Canada and now want permanent residence.
CEC often fits workers on closed work permits, open work permits, and many post-graduation work permit holders. A job offer is not required to be eligible for CEC.
CEC may be a good fit if you:
Worked in Canada in a skilled job
Were authorized to work under a temporary resident status
Can prove your language results with an approved test
Want to live outside Quebec
Want to apply for PR through Express Entry
You need eligible Canadian work experience
Your work must be paid. Volunteer work and unpaid internships do not count. Your experience must be in Canada and in TEER 0, 1, 2, or 3. It can be from more than one NOC.You need at least 1 year of work, or 1,560 hours total, in the 3 years before you apply. Part-time work can count. Multiple part-time jobs can also count.
You must have valid status during that work
The work must be gained while you were authorized to work in Canada under temporary resident status. If you worked remotely, you still must have been physically in Canada and working for a Canadian employer.
Student work and self-employment usually do not count
Work experience gained while you were a full-time student does not count toward the minimum CEC requirement. Self-employment also does not count in most cases. There is a temporary public policy for some physicians.
You must meet the language requirement
You must take an approved language test. For CEC, TEER 0 or 1 jobs require CLB 7 or NCLC 7. TEER 2 or 3 jobs require CLB 5 or NCLC 5. Test results must be valid when you create your profile and when you submit your PR application.
Education is optional, but helpful
CEC has no education requirement. Still, Canadian education or a foreign education assessment may improve your CRS score in the Express Entry pool.
You must be admissible and plan to live outside Quebec
You must be admissible to Canada. You must also plan to live outside Quebec, because Quebec selects its own skilled workers.
Canadian Experience Class eligibility:
How CEC works through Express Entry
First, you confirm that your work experience and language results meet CEC rules.
Then you create an Express Entry profile and enter the pool. IRCC assigns you a CRS score and ranks you against other candidates. If you receive an invitation to apply, you have 60 days to submit your permanent residence application.
CEC candidates can also benefit from category-based selection if they meet the requirements of a current category round.
CEC applicants invited under CEC do not need proof of funds. However, your profile must stay accurate because the system may assess your eligibility under more than one program.
Common CEC mistakes
Choosing the wrong NOC
Counting student work that does not qualify
Claiming duties that do not match the NOC lead statement
Using language results that expire too soon
Misunderstanding which program you may be invited under
Assuming a job offer is required when it is not
How to strengthen your profile
Increasing your language scores
Adding an ECA for foreign education
Claiming an eligible Canadian education
Reviewing your NOC code carefully
Checking whether you may fit a category-based draw
Correcting errors before you receive an invitation
