Who this service is for
Some sponsors have a partner waiting in Brazil. Others married a Brazilian partner who already lives in Canada, or who lives in Brazil as a foreign national.
Settle your relationship category before collecting records. Our spousal sponsorship in Canada overview covers the rest of the program.
Sponsors with a partner in Brazil
Filing outland in the Family Class is typical. We organize the Brazilian records and the federal police certificate around your forms.
Couples already together in Canada
Review inland and outland sponsorship before you apply. The route affects work options and travel while you wait.
Foreign nationals living in Brazil
IRCC asks a principal applicant who is a foreign national in Brazil for a copy of their RNE. We add it and check it against the passport.
What Brazilian Spousal Sponsorship Application Support Includes
The work we take on is written into your agreement. A Brazilian file generally includes these steps.
01
Review eligibility and choose the application route
Review both partners’ circumstances, previous sponsorships and immigration history. Compare inland and outland options, including how travel plans affect the choice.
02
Organize your relationship evidence
Build a clear relationship timeline using records of your life together. Identify missing periods and explain circumstances the documents do not show.
03
Prepare forms and supporting documents
Prepare forms such as IMM 1344 and IMM 5532. Use our spousal sponsorship document checklist to organize your records. Check civil records, translations and country-specific document requirements.
04
Check dates and details across the file
Compare relationship dates with address histories, travel records and supporting documents. Resolve differences before they become conflicting answers in your application.
05
Prepare the application for submission
Review the completed application with you and check the required signatures and uploads. You personally complete the declarations IRCC requires you to sign.
06
Handle agreed follow-up with IRCC
Understand document requests and prepare responses within their deadlines. Interview preparation or additional applications can be discussed when relevant to your file.

Document issues we check before submission
For a Brazilian file, the version of each document matters as much as having it. We check versions before submission.
For documents common to all files, see our spousal sponsorship document checklist.
A state police certificate
IRCC no longer accepts Brazilian state certificates. We confirm the certificate is the national one from the Federal Police.
Partial translations
A translation that skips stamps, annotations or margin notes on a certidão is incomplete. We check the translation covers the whole page.
A missing RNE for a foreign resident
A principal applicant who is a foreign national in Brazil needs the RNE copy. It is easy to overlook because Brazilian citizens do not need one.
Brazilian Documents at a Glance
This table reflects IRCC's current Brazil instructions. Your personalized application package is the controlling list, so check it before ordering anything.
| Document | Where it comes from | Authentication | Translation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marriage certificate (certidão de casamento) | The civil registry office (cartório) that registered the marriage | IRCC's Brazil instructions add no authentication step | Needed from Portuguese into English or French |
| Divorce record, if married before | The court or registry that finalized the divorce | IRCC's Brazil instructions add no authentication step | Needed from Portuguese into English or French |
| Police certificate (Certidão de Antecedentes Criminais) | Brazilian Federal Police, online with a CIE and CPF or in person | State certificates are not accepted | Needed from Portuguese into English or French |
| RNE copy | For a principal applicant who is a foreign national living in Brazil | Copy of the Registro Nacional de Estrangeiros | Needed if not in English or French |
Brazilian Spousal Sponsorship Fees and Processing Times
IRCC charges the same government fees for a Brazilian partner as for anyone else. With no dependent children, the fees come to $1,260; biometrics, when required, add $85. See the spouse sponsorship fees guide for what each one covers.
| Government fee | Amount (CAD) | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Sponsorship and processing fees | $660 | Covers the sponsorship application and your partner's permanent residence processing |
| Right of Permanent Residence Fee (RPRF) | $600 | Due before your partner becomes a permanent resident; refunded if the application is withdrawn or refused |
| Biometrics | $85 | Per person if required; $170 maximum for a family applying together |
| Each dependent child | $180 | Added for every dependent child included in the application |
| Spouse-only total with biometrics | $1,345 | Sponsorship, processing, RPRF and one biometrics fee |
IRCC lists separate processing estimates for inland, outland and Quebec files. Before you plan a move, check the latest figure in the IRCC processing-times tool.
A state police certificate or an incomplete translation can send the file back and cost you time. Professional fees are on our fees page.
Clear fees before you retain us
The consultation comes first; the decision to hire us is yours afterwards. The written agreement then names the fee and the Brazilian records in scope.
IRCC fees, medical exams, translations and registry costs in Brazil are paid separately. Professional prices are listed before you book.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a police clearance certificate from Brazil?
IRCC accepts only the Certidão de Antecedentes Criminais issued by the Brazilian Federal Police. With a Brazilian CIE and CPF, you can request it online through the Federal Police website. Without those cards, you apply in person at a Federal Police office. State police certificates are no longer accepted, so check which one you hold.
Can Brazilians go to Canada without a visa?
Only in some cases. Brazil is on IRCC's visa-required list, but some Brazilian citizens can use an electronic travel authorization instead when flying. They must meet IRCC's conditions for that. Arriving by car, bus, train or boat still needs a visitor visa, sponsorship or not.
How to immigrate from Brazil to Canada?
If you have a Canadian spouse or partner, spousal sponsorship is the family route. The sponsor must be eligible, the relationship genuine, and the partner admissible, including a Federal Police certificate. Brazil adds little to IRCC's package beyond an RNE copy for foreign residents. Economic routes such as Express Entry have separate rules.
How soon after marriage can you get citizenship?
Marriage alone does not make your partner a Canadian citizen. They must first become a permanent resident through sponsorship. Then they need 1,095 days of physical presence in Canada within five years. Days spent here as a temporary resident count as half days, up to 365. A Brazilian partner who first came on a work or study permit can count that time.
Is a marriage certificate from another country valid in Canada?
Generally yes. A marriage legally performed in Brazil is normally recognized in Canada, with no Canadian registration needed. For sponsorship, IRCC still wants the Brazilian civil marriage certificate showing registration. Submit it with a full English or French translation of the Portuguese text.
