Who this service is for

Your partner may live in China, study or work in Canada, or live in a third country. IRCC's China items follow the Chinese passport and documents, wherever your partner is.

Identify your relationship category before gathering records. The general rules sit in our spousal sponsorship in Canada explainer.

Sponsors with a partner in China

Outland Family Class filing is the common route. We collect the hukou, police certificate and civil records and match them to your forms.

Couples living together in Canada

Study inland and outland sponsorship with us before filing. A partner on a study or work permit often has a real choice.

Partners born in China after 1996

IRCC asks for a notarized copy of the medical certificate of birth from China's health authorities. If it cannot be obtained, a written explanation is required.

What Chinese Spousal Sponsorship Application Support Includes

We put the scope in writing before starting. A Chinese file usually involves the following steps.

01
Review eligibility and choose the application route

Review both partners’ circumstances, previous sponsorships and immigration history. Compare inland and outland options, including how travel plans affect the choice.

02
Organize your relationship evidence

Build a clear relationship timeline using records of your life together. Identify missing periods and explain circumstances the documents do not show.

03
Prepare forms and supporting documents

Prepare forms such as IMM 1344 and IMM 5532. Use our spousal sponsorship document checklist to organize your records. Check civil records, translations and country-specific document requirements.

04
Check dates and details across the file

Compare relationship dates with address histories, travel records and supporting documents. Resolve differences before they become conflicting answers in your application.

05
Prepare the application for submission

Review the completed application with you and check the required signatures and uploads. You personally complete the declarations IRCC requires you to sign.

06
Handle agreed follow-up with IRCC

Understand document requests and prepare responses within their deadlines. Interview preparation or additional applications can be discussed when relevant to your file.

Document issues we check before submission

IRCC's China list includes format details the general checklist never mentions. We review each one before submission.

Common documents for all files are on our spousal sponsorship document checklist.

A kinship certificate used as proof

IRCC does not accept a kinship certificate from residents of China as proof of relationship. We replace it with the records IRCC does accept.

A police certificate with a short period

IRCC's China page says a citizen's certificate should cover birth to the current date. We check the period printed on it.

An address without Chinese characters

IRCC wants China addresses in Chinese characters with Pinyin or English and the postal code. A post office box is not accepted.

Chinese Documents at a Glance

These rows follow IRCC's current China instructions for a sponsored partner. Confirm the final list in your personalized package before requesting documents.

Chinese Spousal Sponsorship Fees and Processing Times

Notary steps in China add lead time, so order the notarized birth record and translations early. Professional fees are on our fees page.

Clear fees before you retain us

Talk with us first and decide later. If you go ahead, the written agreement lists the fee and the Chinese documents it includes.

IRCC charges, the medical exam, notary and translation costs in China are separate from our fee. Professional prices are visible before booking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get a Chinese police certificate for my IRCC application?

Yes. IRCC accepts China's Certificate of No Criminal Record, or a notification of non-issuance where a record exists. Chinese citizens apply through the Public Security Bureau or local police station for their hukou or residence. Some cities also offer online requests. For citizens, the certificate should cover birth to the present, with a notarized or certified translation.

How can I obtain a police certificate for China?

From outside China, contact the office where your hukou was registered; many cities accept online or app requests. A family member can apply for you with a power of attorney, notarized if they are not immediate family. Chinese embassies cannot issue it. Foreign nationals who lived in China over 180 days apply to the Exit-Entry Administration Department.

Does China have an apostille?

Yes. China joined the Apostille Convention with effect from November 2023, and Canada joined in January 2024. Apostilles are now available between the two countries. IRCC's China instructions still do not ask for one on marriage records. They ask instead for items such as hukou copies and a notarized medical birth certificate.

Can Chinese people immigrate to Canada?

Yes. Sponsorship rules make no distinction by nationality, so a Chinese spouse or partner qualifies on the usual terms. Chinese citizens need a visitor visa to visit in the meantime. For permanent residence, IRCC's China items add hukou copies, a notarized medical birth certificate for births after 1996, and a bilingual address.

What documents can I use to prove my marital status in Canada?

For a sponsorship, marital status is shown by the civil marriage certificate, plus proof that any earlier marriage ended. Chinese passport holders also provide hukou copies, which record civil status. For included children aged 16 or older, IRCC asks for proof of their marital status too. A kinship certificate does not count as relationship proof.
