Who this service is for

Your partner might still be in Lagos or elsewhere in Nigeria, or already in Canada with you. The documents IRCC wants depend partly on which is true.

Confirm your relationship category at the outset. For the program from start to finish, read our spousal sponsorship in Canada guide.

Sponsors with a partner in Nigeria

Most couples in this position file outland in the Family Class. We plan the police certificate early and build the file around it.

Couples who already live in Canada

Compare inland and outland sponsorship with us before you apply. Status and travel plans can make one route clearly better.

Partners with children born in Nigeria

If a child's birth certificate was not issued at birth, IRCC asks for the supplementary judgment and records naming the parents. We gather those alongside the main file.

Document issues we check before submission

A Nigerian file needs dates and document versions that agree across forms and records. We compare every record before submission.

The documents every sponsorship shares are on our spousal sponsorship document checklist.

A police certificate applied for too late

The mail route needs a courier envelope, certified fingerprints and an international money order. We start it early so it doesn't hold up submission.

Travel history that misses trips

IMM 5562 must match passport stamps and past visa applications. We check each entry against the travel documents.

Uncertified fingerprints

IRCC says fingerprints for the mail application must be taken and certified by a recognized police authority or a Nigerian mission. We confirm this before sending.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get a police clearance certificate from Nigeria?

IRCC names the Police Character Certificate and gives two routes. Apply in person at the Central Criminal Registry in Lagos with your passport, two photos and the fee. Or apply by mail with a courier envelope, a passport copy, certified fingerprints and an international money order. A Nigerian embassy or consulate can certify the certificate for a fee.

Is Canada still accepting Nigerians?

Yes. Spousal sponsorship rules do not change by nationality, so a Nigerian partner is assessed like anyone else. To visit Canada, Nigerian citizens need a visitor visa. For permanent residence, the Nigeria-specific additions are IMM 5562 travel history for each adult and, where it applies, IMM 5546 service details.

What are the requirements to immigrate from Nigeria to Canada?

Through spousal sponsorship, you must be an eligible sponsor and the relationship must be genuine. Your partner must pass medical, security and background checks, including a Nigerian police certificate. The application also needs civil records, relationship evidence and IRCC's Nigeria forms. Other routes, such as Express Entry, have their own separate requirements.

What is the best proof of marriage?

For IRCC, the core proof is a marriage certificate showing the marriage was legally registered where it took place. A wedding programme or ceremony record on its own does not do that job. IRCC then looks at whether the relationship is genuine, through IMM 5532, photos, messages and visits. Consistent dates across all of them matter.

How long does a spousal sponsorship last in Canada?

Outside Quebec, the sponsorship undertaking lasts three years from the day your partner becomes a permanent resident. If they receive social assistance in that time, you repay it. Divorce, separation or your partner becoming a citizen does not cancel the undertaking. Quebec sets its own length of undertaking. The clock starts only once your Nigerian partner lands as a permanent resident, after the police, medical and background checks.
