Who this service is for

British partners often travel freely to Canada, which makes it easy to overlook the sponsorship details. Records from England, Scotland or Northern Ireland each come from different offices.

Confirm your relationship category before you start. Our spousal sponsorship in Canada hub explains the program in full.

Sponsors with a partner in the UK

Many couples file outland in the Family Class while the partner stays in the UK. We collect the ACRO certificate and civil records first.

British partners already living here

A British partner in Canada may be able to file inland. We compare inland and outland sponsorship against your plans.

Anyone divorced in the UK

England and Wales issue a final order or decree absolute; Scotland and Northern Ireland use different records. We confirm you have the right one.

What British Spousal Sponsorship Application Support Includes

Your written agreement spells out our role. A UK file generally follows these steps.

01
Review eligibility and choose the application route

Review both partners’ circumstances, previous sponsorships and immigration history. Compare inland and outland options, including how travel plans affect the choice.

02
Organize your relationship evidence

Build a clear relationship timeline using records of your life together. Identify missing periods and explain circumstances the documents do not show.

03
Prepare forms and supporting documents

Prepare forms such as IMM 1344 and IMM 5532. Use our spousal sponsorship document checklist to organize your records. Check civil records, translations and country-specific document requirements.

04
Check dates and details across the file

Compare relationship dates with address histories, travel records and supporting documents. Resolve differences before they become conflicting answers in your application.

05
Prepare the application for submission

Review the completed application with you and check the required signatures and uploads. You personally complete the declarations IRCC requires you to sign.

06
Handle agreed follow-up with IRCC

Understand document requests and prepare responses within their deadlines. Interview preparation or additional applications can be discussed when relevant to your file.

Document issues we check before submission

A UK file has few country rules, so the standard records carry the weight. We check the ones IRCC relies on most.

Documents shared by every file are listed in our spousal sponsorship document checklist.

An interim divorce order

A conditional order or decree nisi does not end the marriage. IRCC needs the final order or decree absolute.

“No Live Trace” left unexplained

IRCC asks for further information on a stepped-down record, including offences, sentences and dates. We prepare it before IRCC has to ask.

The wrong office for the certificate

A marriage in Scotland or Northern Ireland is not held by the General Register Office for England and Wales. We order from the correct one.

British Documents at a Glance

IRCC's instructions add no UK-specific forms, so these rows cover the UK records a sponsorship usually needs. Generate your personalized checklist to confirm the list.

British Spousal Sponsorship Fees and Processing Times

IRCC charges British partners the same government fees as everyone else. For a spouse with no children, fees reach $1,260, and biometrics cost $85 if IRCC asks. Each amount is explained in our spouse sponsorship fees guide.

IRCC government fees for sponsoring a partner from the United Kingdom, 2026 (CAD)
Government feeAmount (CAD)What it covers
Sponsorship and processing fees$660Covers the sponsorship application and your partner's permanent residence processing
Right of Permanent Residence Fee (RPRF)$600Due before your partner becomes a permanent resident; refunded if the application is withdrawn or refused
Biometrics$85Per person if required; $170 maximum for a family applying together
Each dependent child$180Added for every dependent child included in the application
Spouse-only total with biometrics$1,345Sponsorship, processing, RPRF and one biometrics fee

Inland, outland and Quebec applications carry separate estimates. The processing-times tool on the IRCC website shows the current figure, so check it before fixing dates.

An interim divorce order in place of the final one can hold up an otherwise simple file. Professional fees appear on our fees page.

Clear fees before you retain us

We start with a consultation and no commitment. Hiring us means a written agreement stating the fee and the UK documents we cover.

IRCC fees, the medical exam and UK certificate costs are outside our fee. Professional prices can be seen before you book.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a police certificate from the UK for a Canadian visa application?

For permanent residence through sponsorship, yes, when your partner spent at least six straight months in the UK as an adult. IRCC names the ACRO police certificate. For visits, certificates are needed only in some programs or on request. British citizens flying to Canada need an eTA, not a visa.

How can I get a police certificate from ACRO in the UK?

Apply online through ACRO, the Criminal Records Office run for the National Police Chiefs' Council. IRCC's UK page points applicants there. If the certificate says “No Live Trace”, IRCC wants more detail on the stepped-down record. Contact ACRO, then give IRCC a statement of the offences, sentences and dates.

How do I get a copy of an UK marriage certificate?

For a marriage in England or Wales, order a copy from the General Register Office online, by phone or by post. You can also order from the local register office where it was registered. With the GRO index number, a certificate costs £12.50. Scotland and Northern Ireland use separate processes.

What's the difference between divorce and decree?

Divorce is the legal process; the decree or order is the document that ends the marriage. In England and Wales, that final document is a final order or decree absolute. An earlier conditional order or decree nisi does not end the marriage. IRCC needs the final document as proof the marriage is over.

Do I lose my PR after getting a divorce?

Divorce does not end permanent residence by itself. The old two-year conditional status for sponsored partners was repealed in 2017. Status can still be lost for other reasons, such as failing the residency obligation or misrepresentation. The sponsor's three-year undertaking continues after a divorce.
