Who this service is for
American partners can usually visit Canada easily, so many couples are already splitting time between the two countries. That affects which route fits.
Check your relationship category first. Our spousal sponsorship in Canada reference covers the full program.
Sponsors with a partner in the US
Outland sponsorship in the Family Class suits partners who stay in the US while IRCC processes. We plan the FBI check around that timeline.
American partners already in Canada
A partner living with you in Canada with valid status may qualify to file inland. We weigh inland and outland sponsorship with you.
Partners who lived in other countries
IRCC wants a police certificate for each country where your partner spent six months or more in a row as an adult. We map those countries first.
What American Spousal Sponsorship Application Support Includes
We confirm our scope in writing. An American file usually runs through these steps.
01
Review eligibility and choose the application route
Review both partners’ circumstances, previous sponsorships and immigration history. Compare inland and outland options, including how travel plans affect the choice.
02
Organize your relationship evidence
Build a clear relationship timeline using records of your life together. Identify missing periods and explain circumstances the documents do not show.
03
Prepare forms and supporting documents
Prepare forms such as IMM 1344 and IMM 5532. Use our spousal sponsorship document checklist to organize your records. Check civil records, translations and country-specific document requirements.
04
Check dates and details across the file
Compare relationship dates with address histories, travel records and supporting documents. Resolve differences before they become conflicting answers in your application.
05
Prepare the application for submission
Review the completed application with you and check the required signatures and uploads. You personally complete the declarations IRCC requires you to sign.
06
Handle agreed follow-up with IRCC
Understand document requests and prepare responses within their deadlines. Interview preparation or additional applications can be discussed when relevant to your file.

Document issues we check before submission
IRCC adds no US-specific forms, so the standard records carry the file. We check the parts IRCC looks at closely.
Our spousal sponsorship document checklist lists the documents all applications need.
A state record in place of the FBI check
IRCC's US page names the FBI Identity History Summary. We make sure that is the certificate in the file.
Missing certificates for other countries
A partner who worked or studied abroad for six months or more needs that country's certificate too. We catch these before submission.
Travel dates that disagree
Frequent cross-border trips make date errors easy on the forms. We compare them with passports and other records.
American Documents at a Glance
IRCC's instructions add no US-specific forms, so these rows cover the American records a sponsorship usually needs. Confirm the list in your personalized checklist.
| Document | Where it comes from | Authentication | Translation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marriage certificate | The county or state office that recorded the marriage | IRCC's US instructions add no extra step | Issued in English |
| Divorce decree, if married before | The court that granted the divorce | Shows the earlier marriage legally ended | Issued in English |
| FBI Identity History Summary | Federal Bureau of Investigation, requested online | Needed if your partner lived in the US six months or more as an adult | Issued in English |
| Police certificates for other countries | Each country where your partner lived six months or more as an adult | Follow IRCC's page for that country | Translation if not in English or French |
American Spousal Sponsorship Fees and Processing Times
An American partner pays IRCC the same fees as any other applicant. Fees for a spouse with no children add up to $1,260, and biometrics are $85 when requested. Our spouse sponsorship fees guide covers each line.
| Government fee | Amount (CAD) | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Sponsorship and processing fees | $660 | Covers the sponsorship application and your partner's permanent residence processing |
| Right of Permanent Residence Fee (RPRF) | $600 | Due before your partner becomes a permanent resident; refunded if the application is withdrawn or refused |
| Biometrics | $85 | Per person if required; $170 maximum for a family applying together |
| Each dependent child | $180 | Added for every dependent child included in the application |
| Spouse-only total with biometrics | $1,345 | Sponsorship, processing, RPRF and one biometrics fee |
IRCC posts one estimate for inland files, another for outland files and a third for Quebec. Check the IRCC processing-times tool shortly before you file, since the figure changes.
After you apply, IRCC sends medical exam instructions, which your partner has 30 days to follow. Professional fees are on our fees page.
Clear fees before you retain us
Begin with a consultation, and decide about hiring us afterwards. The written agreement then records the fee and the US documents in scope.
IRCC fees, the medical exam and FBI or court record costs are separate. You can review professional prices before booking.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get an FBI police clearance certificate for Canada immigration?
Yes. IRCC names the FBI Identity History Summary as the US police certificate and says to request it online from the FBI. Your partner needs one if they lived in the US six months or more in a row after turning 18. Upload a colour scan of the original you receive.
Can I get an FBI background check if I'm from Canada?
Yes. The FBI takes requests online, and IRCC's US page points applicants there. For a sponsorship, the check matters for your partner, not for you. Canadian citizen and permanent resident sponsors do not submit police certificates. A partner with an adult stay of six months or more in the US needs one.
What does IRCC check in background check for spousal sponsorship?
IRCC runs medical, security and background checks on your partner and included family members. Police certificates are required for every country with an adult stay of six months or more. For a partner who lived in the US, that includes the FBI Identity History Summary. Officers also review the relationship itself.
Is there an interview for Canadian spousal sponsorship?
Not always. If IRCC needs one, it tells you in writing, with the date, time, place and documents to bring. An officer may ask the principal applicant about the relationship, education, family, plans, finances and past difficulties with the law. Consistent answers across your forms make that conversation easier.
Do I need a medical exam for spousal sponsorship?
Yes. Every permanent residence applicant needs an immigration medical exam, and so do family members, even those not coming. A panel physician must do it; your own doctor cannot. Results are valid for 12 months. Some people already in Canada with a recent low-risk exam may be exempt until October 5, 2029.
