Who this service is for

Some Ukrainian partners are in Canada on work permits issued under special measures. Others are in Ukraine or elsewhere in Europe.

Pin down the relationship category first. For the wider program, go to our spousal sponsorship in Canada page.

Partners in Canada on a work permit

A partner living with you here with valid status can often apply inland rather than outland. We check the permit dates before choosing.

Sponsors with a partner in Ukraine or Europe

The outland Family Class route usually applies. We plan the police extract and civil records around your partner's location.

Couples who married in a Ukrainian church

IRCC's Ukraine instructions ask for both the church wedding certificate and the civil marriage certificate. We make sure the pair is complete.

What Ukrainian Spousal Sponsorship Application Support Includes

Everything we do is listed in your written agreement. For a Ukrainian partner, these are the usual steps.

01
Review eligibility and choose the application route

Review both partners’ circumstances, previous sponsorships and immigration history. Compare inland and outland options, including how travel plans affect the choice.

02
Organize your relationship evidence

Build a clear relationship timeline using records of your life together. Identify missing periods and explain circumstances the documents do not show.

03
Prepare forms and supporting documents

Prepare forms such as IMM 1344 and IMM 5532. Use our spousal sponsorship document checklist to organize your records. Check civil records, translations and country-specific document requirements.

04
Check dates and details across the file

Compare relationship dates with address histories, travel records and supporting documents. Resolve differences before they become conflicting answers in your application.

05
Prepare the application for submission

Review the completed application with you and check the required signatures and uploads. You personally complete the declarations IRCC requires you to sign.

06
Handle agreed follow-up with IRCC

Understand document requests and prepare responses within their deadlines. Interview preparation or additional applications can be discussed when relevant to your file.

Document issues we check before submission

For a partner already in Canada, status dates matter as much as documents. We check both before submission.

All files share the documents on our spousal sponsorship document checklist.

Only one of the two wedding records

IRCC's Ukraine list names both the church and the civil certificate. A missing one needs an explanation, not silence.

Status that lapses during processing

An inland application depends on your partner holding valid status. We track permit expiry dates and the extension deadlines.

An extract that misses names

Maiden names and transliterations should match across the passport, the extract and your forms. We reconcile each spelling.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the current PR updates for Ukrainians in Canada in 2026?

The special permanent residence pathway for Ukrainians with family in Canada closed on October 22, 2024. Applications submitted before then are still being processed. Measures changed again on April 1, 2026, and they now centre on work permit extensions. A Ukrainian married to a Canadian can still be sponsored through the regular spousal route.

How long are Ukrainians allowed to stay in Canada?

It depends on the document they hold. A valid open work permit issued under the public policy for Ukrainians can be extended for up to three years. The deadline to apply is March 31, 2027. Visitors, students and temporary resident permit holders extend their stay through IRCC's regular process.

What are the current immigration procedures for Ukrainians in Canada?

The emergency travel program (CUAET) ended on July 15, 2023. IRCC keeps measures for people holding a Ukrainian public-policy work permit and for those awaiting a pathway decision. Everyone else uses regular programs, including spousal sponsorship. IRCC also notes passport renewal delays and assesses affected extension applications case by case.

Can I leave Canada while waiting for inland spousal sponsorship?

You can, but IRCC warns that your partner may not be allowed back in. That risk is greater for anyone who needs a visitor visa, as Ukrainian citizens do. Inland applicants are expected to live with the sponsor in Canada. If long travel is likely, compare the outland route first.

Who is eligible to receive Inland Spousal Sponsorship in Canada?

The in-Canada class fits a spouse or common-law partner who lives with you in Canada and holds valid temporary resident status. A 2005 public policy also covers some people whose status lapsed. Many Ukrainian partners hold public-policy work permits, which count as valid status. Inland applicants may also qualify for an open work permit.
