Frequently asked questions

Is Canada accepting Russian immigrants?

Yes. Russian citizens can apply through Canadian immigration programs if they meet the relevant eligibility and admissibility requirements. Canada’s Russia information page directs applicants to immigration services. Check submission arrangements carefully: IRCC says VACs in Russia no longer accept passports or documents. When asked to submit a passport, choose a VAC outside Russia that accepts documents and follow the instructions in your request.

Can Russian people travel to Canada?

Yes, if they meet Canada’s entry requirements and hold the required travel documents. Russian passport holders generally need a visitor visa. IRCC’s travel-document rules differ for Canadian permanent residents, dual Canadian citizens and US lawful permanent residents, so check your status as well as your passport. If your plan is to work or study, review the relevant permit requirements before booking travel.

What are the requirements for a Canada work permit?

Requirements depend on the type of work permit and where you apply. Applicants outside Canada need the forms and evidence in their IRCC document checklist, plus any applicable employer documents. A Russian citizen applying from another country must also provide proof of their immigration status there. For many LMIA-exempt employer-specific applications, the employer supplies an offer-of-employment number beginning with A followed by seven digits.

How long does it take to get a Canadian work permit?

There is no single processing time for all applicants. Use IRCC’s processing-time tool for a work permit from outside Canada and select the country you are applying from. A Russian citizen living elsewhere should use that location rather than automatically selecting Russia. The displayed estimate is not a maximum or a guarantee, so it should not be treated as a confirmed employment start date.

How much does a 2-year work permit in Canada cost?

The standard IRCC work-permit fee is CAD $155 per person; the fee list does not set a separate two-year rate. An open work permit normally adds CAD $100, and biometrics may add CAD $85. Exemptions can apply. For an application from Russia, also budget for any required translations and separate professional fees. IRCC’s application guide warns that insufficient processing fees can cause an application to be returned.
