How we help you immigrate from the United States to Canada

Permanent residence

A temporary Canadian work permit and permanent residence are separate applications with different requirements. A consultation can assess whether Express Entry fits your experience and settlement plans. The firm offers profile preparation, invited application support, and separate reviews of Express Entry profiles or applications at the invitation stage.

Spousal sponsorship

If your spouse or partner is Canadian or a Canadian permanent resident, ask about sponsorship eligibility and preparation. Advice considers both partners’ circumstances, including whether a sponsor living abroad can qualify. Application support is available for couples abroad and couples already together in Canada.

Work permits

The CUSMA professional category requires US or Mexican citizenship, an eligible profession and pre-arranged Canadian employment. Living in the United States alone is insufficient. A consultation can assess that category, a company transfer or another work permit route relevant to your situation.

Study permits

Considering a Canadian study program? Your consultant can assess the requirements that apply and help prepare the application. US residence or citizenship should not be treated as automatic permission to study or work in Canada. Discuss the course and any separate longer-term plans.

Refusals and changed circumstances

A refusal or returned application can leave you unsure what to do next. Book a paid consultation to discuss what happened and whether further application support is appropriate.

Frequently asked questions

How difficult is it for a US citizen to immigrate to Canada?

US citizens must qualify for a Canadian immigration program; American citizenship does not create an automatic right to settle. Express Entry assesses factors including skilled work, education and language results. Even native English speakers need an approved language test for Express Entry, and those results must remain valid when the permanent residence application is submitted.

Is Canada allowing Americans to immigrate?

Americans can apply to immigrate to Canada if they meet the requirements of an available program. A Canadian work opportunity may also support temporary entry, but it is separate from permanent residence. For example, the CUSMA professional category requires US or Mexican citizenship, a listed profession, the required qualifications and pre-arranged employment with a Canadian employer. US residence alone does not qualify.

How much money does an American need to immigrate to Canada?

The amount an American applicant needs depends on the Canadian program and family size. Express Entry settlement funds, when required, are separate from application fees and moving costs. Include a spouse and dependent children in the family count even if they are not moving. Property equity and money borrowed from another person do not qualify as settlement funds.

Can I live in Canada if I am a US citizen?

US citizenship alone does not authorize permanent residence in Canada. An American can seek entry as a visitor, but living in Canada permanently requires the appropriate immigration status. Working under CUSMA also requires meeting the relevant category rules; it is not a general right to take any Canadian job. Plan the temporary or permanent application around the purpose of your stay.

How long can a US citizen stay in Canada?

A US citizen admitted as a visitor can usually stay in Canada for up to six months. A border officer may authorize a shorter or longer visit, so check any date recorded in your passport or visitor document. Without a stamp, passport expiry can shorten the usual six-month period. IRCC recommends applying to extend a visit at least 30 days before the authorized stay ends.
