Who is this service for

An inadmissibility concern can leave you uncertain about a family visit, business trip or your next steps in Canada. We start with your actual records and IRCC’s TRP eligibility requirements. A concern does not automatically mean a TRP is the appropriate route.

People with a criminal record

A charge, conviction or completed sentence may need a Canadian immigration assessment. Bring the available court outcome and sentence records so we can identify the issue accurately.

People with a prior immigration breach

Previous overstays, unauthorized work or other non-compliance need careful review. We distinguish a possible TRP request from ordinary status applications and any separate authorization you may require.

People with another inadmissibility concern

Medical or other admissibility concerns require an assessment of the specific grounds and supporting evidence. A TRP request must explain why the temporary need justifies permission despite the concern.

What Temporary Resident Permit Application Support Includes

Your written agreement identifies the work included in your file. Support can cover these six steps.

01
Identify the legal concern

Review the relevant incident, court disposition, sentence and completion dates alongside your immigration history. Identify what needs assessment before choosing an application.

02
Compare available routes

Clarify whether temporary permission is the right question. A TRP differs from a visitor visa, restoration, criminal rehabilitation and authorization to return to Canada. Separate applications require their own assessment and agreed scope.

03
Define the reason to enter or stay

Explain the purpose, requested period and why the visit or stay is needed. Match the explanation with dated invitations, event details or other records relevant to your circumstances.

04
Build the documentary record

Compare names, dates, decisions and prior disclosures across the file. For a subsequent TRP, review the current permit, its conditions and changed circumstances. Applying for a subsequent TRP does not confer maintained status.

05
Prepare the submission

Match the forms, evidence and payment records to the applicable IRCC application route. Visa-required applicants outside Canada generally request consideration with the relevant temporary-residence application in the IRCC secure account. The explanation, supporting records and separate TRP receipt go in Client information under Optional documents.

Outside Canada, eTA-required applicants use the IRCC web form to obtain instructions. U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents currently in the U.S. request Los Angeles visa-office instructions through the web form.

In Canada, a TRP-only request uses the paper route with IMM 5708 and checklist IMM 5557. An eligible combined study or work request uses IMM 5709 or IMM 5710 instead. Port-of-entry requests remain discretionary where available; they are not a guaranteed shortcut. Specialized vulnerable-person routes have separate instructions.

06
Post-submission support

Explain requests for additional information and prepare responses covered by your written agreement. Any additional application, hearing or court work needs separate discussion; representation does not guarantee entry or a decision date.

Choose the support you need

Start with focused advice, or discuss defined support for preparing and presenting your request.

Route and risk consultation

Discuss the concern, available records and possible application route during a booked appointment. Questions and documents sent for the consultation are reviewed within that session. A full application review requires a separate agreement.

TRP preparation and representation

For clients seeking help with the request itself. Agreed work can include evidence organization, forms, the written explanation, submission preparation and specified follow-up. The retainer sets the limits of representation.

Document issues we check before submission

A useful explanation needs records that support its dates and purpose. We check for gaps and conflicting information before submission.

See our Temporary Resident Permit application services for the broader service scope.

Incomplete court or police records

Check whether the record shows the charge, final disposition, sentence and completion of its terms. A brief police summary may not explain the full outcome.

Vague purpose letters

Connect the requested period with the actual reason to enter or stay. Identify supporting dates, responsibilities and arrangements rather than relying on a general wish to visit.

Unaddressed immigration history

Compare earlier refusals, status periods and removal history with current answers. For a subsequent TRP, explain changed circumstances and include the existing permit information required by IRCC’s in-Canada guide.

Eligibility requirements at a glance

A TRP provides temporary permission despite inadmissibility or non-compliance. It does not permanently resolve the underlying issue.

Temporary Resident Permit requirements and limits
IssueWhat is assessedImportant limit
Inadmissibility or non-complianceThe actual grounds and the records explaining them.A named concern alone does not establish eligibility for a TRP.
Temporary reason to enter or stayYour purpose, requested period and supporting evidence, weighed against health or safety risks.Issuance is discretionary; the need must justify the request.
Initial or subsequent requestCurrent circumstances and, for a subsequent permit, existing conditions and changed facts.A subsequent TRP requires a new assessment; it is not routine renewal.
Current status and expiryYour present immigration documents, conditions and expiry dates.Applying for a subsequent TRP does not confer maintained status.
Work or studySeparate eligibility and a separate permit application. A TRP valid for at least six months may permit an application.A TRP itself does not authorize work or study.
Validity and travelThe period authorized, up to three years, and any re-entry permission.A TRP can be cancelled and normally becomes invalid on departure unless re-entry is authorized. A counterfoil’s entry deadline is not permission to stay until that date.

Temporary Resident Permit Fees and Processing Times

These are government charges in Canadian dollars. The amounts that apply depend on the route and any exemption; they are not a single package total.

Government fees for a Temporary Resident Permit request
Government chargeAmount (CAD)When it may apply
Temporary Resident Permit$246.25 per personStandard TRP fee, subject to applicable exemptions. The fee is not refunded if the request is refused.
Visitor visa$100Only where an accompanying visitor-visa application is required.
Study permit$150Only for a separately required and eligible study-permit application.
Work permit$155Only for a separately required and eligible work-permit application.
Biometrics$85 per personOnly when biometrics are required and the fee is payable.

Government fees are separate from professional fees and third-party costs. Certain protected or vulnerable-person categories have special instructions and fee exemptions. Confirm the applicable category before paying. The inland TRP and open-work-permit instructions exempt the open work permit holder fee; do not add that charge automatically.

Processing times

There is no single published processing estimate established here for every TRP route. Location, the application route and the facts requiring assessment can affect the process. A travel booking or permit expiry does not guarantee an earlier decision.

Check IRCC processing information for an applicable accompanying application. A displayed estimate for a visitor visa, work permit or study permit is not a TRP-wide promise.

Clear fees before you retain us

Your written agreement confirms the work, professional fee and responsibilities before preparation begins. Government charges, translations and other third-party costs remain separate.

For a North York TRP file, discuss the records available, the proposed route and any follow-up you want covered. Consultation and retained application work have different scopes.

Temporary Resident Permit Help Across the GTA

North York clients can arrange advice in person, online or by phone. If travel across the GTA is difficult, discuss remote consultation when booking. The application route depends on your circumstances and location, not the neighbourhood where you seek advice.

Frequently asked questions

Who is eligible for a temporary resident permit in Canada?

IRCC says a foreign national who is inadmissible or does not meet immigration-law requirements may request a temporary resident permit. For an initial in-Canada request, the applicant must not currently hold valid temporary resident status. The person must show a compelling reason to enter or remain in Canada that outweighs the health or safety risks. Eligibility does not guarantee approval; an officer decides whether the circumstances justify a permit.

How long does a temporary resident permit last in Canada?

A temporary resident permit may be issued for up to three years. The officer sets its actual validity for the circumstances. It is valid only for the period stated and can be cancelled at any time. Unless the document specifically authorizes re-entry, leaving Canada may end your ability to use it.

Can I work in Canada with a temporary resident permit?

No. A temporary resident permit does not by itself authorize employment. You need a valid work permit or another specific work authorization before starting work. IRCC says a TRP valid for at least six months may let you apply for a work or study permit inside Canada. Approval is separate.

How to extend a Canada temporary resident permit?

IRCC treats this as an application for a subsequent temporary resident permit, not an automatic extension. Apply before the current permit expires, explain why the compelling need continues and provide the required evidence and fee. Approval is discretionary. A pending application does not give a TRP holder maintained status, so do not assume existing work or study authorization continues.

How much does a temporary resident permit cost in Canada?

For North York application support, professional cost depends on the agreed work and is quoted in a written service agreement. The government application charge is separate; IRCC currently lists CAD 246.25 per person for a temporary resident permit. Translation, records and other third-party costs can also be separate. Review both the service quote and live IRCC fee before proceeding; payment never guarantees approval.
