Who this service is for

The service supports workers and employers preparing a temporary work permit application. Permanent residence is a separate application, even when working in Canada forms part of your longer-term plan.

For the national background, read the guide to work permit in Canada.

Workers with a Canadian job offer

You have an offer supported by a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), or a potential LMIA-exempt route. The application must reflect the employer, job and permit conditions that apply.

Workers extending a permit or changing employers

You are already in Canada and need an extension, changed conditions or a new employer-specific permit. An approaching expiry can be stressful. Bring your current permit and job documents so the next steps can be assessed.

People who may qualify for an open permit

You may qualify through a spousal, bridging or post-graduation category, or International Experience Canada (IEC) Working Holiday. Eligibility must be checked for your particular category. IEC Young Professionals and International Co-op permits are employer-specific.

Toronto-area employers

You want the worker’s application prepared with the correct employment documents. Employer-side LMIA work is separate from the worker’s work permit engagement.

What Work Permit Application Support Includes

Your written agreement identifies the work covered for a first application, an extension or a change of conditions.

01

Confirm the route and filing location

The consultant reviews your status, immigration history, job offer and relevant deadlines. A work permit may fall under the LMIA-based Temporary Foreign Worker Program or the LMIA-exempt International Mobility Program. Open permits have their own eligibility conditions. Bring your passport, current status documents and any job offer or LMIA decision.

02

Work with your employer, when needed

Where employer involvement is needed, Mirzoyan Immigration Services works with your employer to clarify the required information and documents.

03

Prepare the necessary IRCC forms

Mirzoyan Immigration Services fills out the necessary IRCC forms using the information and supporting documents you provide.

04

Submit and complete required biometrics

Mirzoyan Immigration Services submits through the appropriate IRCC account and monitors requests covered by the agreement. If biometrics are required, you pay the applicable fee and wait for IRCC’s biometric instruction letter before booking. In Canada, appointments are at designated Service Canada offices. Outside Canada, use an official collection site listed by IRCC. Bring the instruction letter and valid passport, and meet the letter’s deadline. See IRCC’s biometrics steps.

05

Handle agreed follow-up and explain the decision

You obtain police certificates and other supporting documents when required. Mirzoyan Immigration Services reviews what you provide and handles agreed responses to IRCC. A procedural fairness letter, interview or additional application may need a separate scope. After a decision, review the conditions and expiry date on your permit before making work plans.

Choose the support you need

Start with advice on a specific question, or discuss retaining Mirzoyan Immigration Services to prepare your application.

Consultation guidance

Use a paid consultation to discuss your route, status, documents or an IRCC decision. Document discussion depends on the appointment length and material involved. A consultation does not include full application preparation.

Retained application preparation

For workers or employers who want the agreed work permit file prepared and submitted with representation. The written agreement sets out the documents, submission and follow-up covered. Employer-side LMIA services require separate agreement.

Document issues we check before submission

Check that your forms and supporting documents give a consistent account of your circumstances. This includes first applications, extensions and changes to permit conditions.

For forms and document preparation, see IRCC’s in-Canada worker guide.

Missing or incomplete information

Review the forms and documents you provide for missing answers, unclear scans or information that needs explanation.

Details that do not match

Compare names, dates, employment history and status information across your application and supporting records. Any differences need to be clarified before submission.

Current status and document validity

For extensions or changes of conditions, review your current permit, its expiry date and the conditions already in place. Check the validity of the supporting documents you provide.

If you apply before your work permit expires, maintained status may let you keep working while IRCC decides. You must remain in Canada and follow your original permit conditions. Employer-specific permit holders remain limited to their authorized employer, job and work location. Maintained status alone does not authorize a new employer. Apply for the new permit and wait for approval or IRCC’s interim work authorization before starting. Open permit holders may change employers within their permit conditions.

Evidence for the application route

Review whether your documents support the application category and circumstances described. Where employer involvement is required, check the relevant employer information and documents.

Eligibility Requirements at a Glance

Basic work permit requirements and qualifications
Work permit typePossible key requirements
Employer-specific permit requiring an LMIAA Canadian job offer and a positive LMIA from the employer. Evidence that you meet the job requirements and applicable IRCC requirements.
Employer-specific permit exempt from an LMIAA Canadian job offer and a qualifying LMIA exemption. An employer-submitted offer and compliance fee are usually required, unless exempt.
Open work permitEvidence that you qualify for an open-permit category. No job offer or employer-submitted offer is required. Category-specific conditions and work restrictions may apply.

An extension or change of conditions uses the requirements for the relevant work permit category. Your current status and permit conditions also need review.

These are high-level descriptions only. Requirements depend on your circumstances. Book a consultation for more information about your work permit options.

Work Permit Fees and Processing Times

Government charges depend on the permit route and any exemptions. These amounts are separate from professional fees and are not a universal application total.

Common government fees for work permit applications, in Canadian dollars
Government feeAmount (CAD)When it applies
Work permit processing$155Per person, including extensions, unless exempt. Some categories have different fee arrangements.
Open work permit holder$100Additional holder fee where applicable; not charged to every open-permit applicant.
Biometrics$85Per individual, when new biometrics and the fee are required. Valid existing biometrics and exemptions can change the amount.
Employer compliance$230Generally employer-paid for employer-specific, LMIA-exempt applications, unless exempt. Open permits do not require this fee.
LMIA processing$1,000Per position in applicable TFWP streams, paid by the employer. Stream-specific exemptions can apply. Employers cannot recover the fee from workers.

Medical exams, translations and other case costs are separate. Category-specific charges may also apply.

Processing depends on the application route and circumstances, rather than a separate Toronto queue. In-Canada and outside-Canada applications have different estimates. Allow time for gathering records, employer documents and any required biometrics. Check IRCC’s current processing-times tool for the relevant application. Published estimates are not a guarantee or maximum.

Clear Fees Before You Retain Us

Discuss the help you need for your Toronto work permit application before committing to representation. Your written agreement confirms the flat professional fee and the work included.

Government fees, employer-side work, medical exams and translations are separate unless your agreement expressly includes a service. Confirm who is handling each part of the file.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much do immigration consultants charge in Canada for a work permit?

Professional fees vary with the permit route, employer involvement and agreed work. Mirzoyan Immigration Services provides a flat professional fee in writing before retained work begins; review the firm’s fee information. Government charges, biometrics, medical examinations, translations and employer-side work are separate unless the agreement expressly includes them. A consultation has separate booking terms.

How long does it take to process a closed work permit in Canada?

Processing depends on the filing location and work-permit category. Use IRCC’s current processing-times tool for the route that applies. The estimate is neither a guarantee nor a maximum. Employer steps, an LMIA where required, document collection, biometrics and medical results can add time before or during the work-permit process.

Can I get a Canadian work permit without a job offer?

A job offer is not required for an open work permit, but you must qualify under a specific open-permit category. Employer-specific permits generally require a job offer and may also require an LMIA or an LMIA-exempt employer submission. Review IRCC’s open-work-permit categories before assuming an offer-free route is available.

How to get a work permit in Toronto?

Toronto does not have a separate municipal work-permit process. Identify whether you need an employer-specific or open permit, complete any employer step such as an LMIA or LMIA-exempt offer, and apply through the IRCC route for your location. Start with IRCC’s work-in-Canada guide. Local residence does not replace the federal eligibility rules.

Who is eligible for a work permit in Canada?

Eligibility depends on the permit category. An employer-specific application may need a job offer, an LMIA or an LMIA exemption, while an open permit requires eligibility under a listed category. Applicants must also meet the general temporary-worker and admissibility requirements. Use IRCC’s work-permit eligibility guidance for the route and filing location that apply.
