Who is this service for
CEC is for workers relying on qualifying Canadian skilled work experience, including many current or former permit holders.
Workers with Canadian experience
You have paid skilled work in Canada and need the dates, hours, occupation and authorization reviewed against the CEC requirements.
PGWP holders planning permanent residence
You are building Canadian work experience after graduation and want to understand when the record may support CEC. Permit timing also affects the broader plan.
CEC candidates with mixed work histories
Multiple employers, occupations, status periods, remote work or employment changes make the qualifying record harder to calculate and document consistently.

Document issues we check before submission
CEC documentation must support both the work and the authorization held while it was performed. See the national CEC service page.
Employment letters without useful detail
Letters should support dates, hours, pay and duties. A title-only letter can leave the claimed occupation or qualifying period unclear.
Work dates that exceed authorization
Check claimed employment periods against permits and maintained-status records. The application must support work authorization for the employment being counted.
Student or self-employed work mixed into the total
Work performed during full-time study or as self-employment may be treated differently under CEC. The record should separate those periods before hours are calculated.
Eligibility requirements at a glance
Canadian Experience Class eligibility turns on qualifying Canadian skilled work and language ability. It is distinct from Federal Skilled Worker eligibility and has no education requirement, although education can affect Express Entry ranking.
| Requirement | Basic requirement |
|---|---|
| Authorized Canadian skilled work | The work must be paid and performed in Canada while authorized under temporary resident status. It must be classified in TEER 0, 1, 2 or 3. Remote work counts only while you are physically in Canada and working for a Canadian employer. |
| Amount and timing of experience | You generally need at least one year of qualifying Canadian skilled work within the three years before applying. Count at least 1,560 hours, with no more than 30 counted hours per week across all jobs. The experience may be accumulated rather than continuous. |
| NOC duties | The work must show the actions in the NOC lead statement and most of the listed main duties. Qualifying experience may come from more than one eligible NOC. |
| Official language | An approved test must meet the required level in reading, writing, listening and speaking. TEER 0 or 1 work requires CLB or NCLC 7. TEER 2 or 3 work requires CLB or NCLC 5. |
| Excluded work | Self-employment and work gained while a full-time student generally do not count. IRCC identifies a narrow temporary policy for certain publicly funded medical doctors. |
| Education | There is no education requirement for Canadian Experience Class eligibility. Canadian or assessed foreign education may still add points in the Express Entry ranking system. |
| Admissibility and destination | The applicant must be admissible to Canada and plan to live outside Quebec. Quebec selects its own skilled workers. |

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to process a Canadian experience Class application?
Canadian Experience Class processing time changes, so use IRCC’s live Express Entry estimate. Processing begins when IRCC receives a complete permanent-residence application after an invitation. Creating a profile does not start that clock. Missing or unclear records, work-history verification, biometrics, medical examinations and background checks can extend processing. The displayed estimate is not a guaranteed decision date.
Who is eligible for the CEC?
CEC generally requires one year of qualifying paid Canadian work in TEER 0–3 during the three years before applying. You need 1,560 hours, counting no more than 30 hours weekly. The work must be authorized under temporary resident status. You must meet the language threshold, be admissible and intend to live outside Quebec. Full-time student work and self-employment generally do not count.
What is the minimum score for Canadian experience class?
CEC has no permanent minimum CRS invitation score. The language minimum is CLB or NCLC 7 for TEER 0 or 1 work. For TEER 2 or 3 work, the minimum is CLB or NCLC 5. Eligible profiles are ranked through Express Entry, and CRS cut-offs vary by invitation round. Check the round type and date before relying on a published score.
How much is the CEC application fee?
CEC government fees are $1,590 CAD for the principal applicant: $990 processing plus the $600 right of permanent residence fee (RPRF). An accompanying spouse or partner pays the same; each dependent child costs $270. Biometrics cost $85 per person when required. Medical examinations, police certificates and professional services are separate. IRCC refunds the RPRF if the application is withdrawn or refused. Processing fees are generally non-refundable once processing starts.
Is the Canadian experience Class (CEC) part of Express Entry?
The Canadian Experience Class is one of the federal programs managed through Express Entry. Meeting CEC eligibility lets you create a profile, but it does not guarantee an invitation. The Comprehensive Ranking System ranks eligible profiles for invitation rounds. CEC applicants do not need settlement funds. IRCC instructs them to upload a letter explaining the exemption.
