Immigration in Windsor: What You Need to Know
Windsor recorded a population of 229,660 in the 2021 Census, with the broader Windsor CMA at 422,630, per Statistics Canada. Approximately 27% of Windsor residents were born outside Canada at the time of the 2021 Census, slightly higher than the Ontario non-GTA average.
The largest immigrant communities in Windsor include those from Iraq, Syria, India, Lebanon, and the Philippines, with a long-established Italian community as well. Windsor is well-known for its Arab and Chaldean Christian communities, particularly in neighbourhoods such as Wyandotte and South Windsor.
Windsor's economy is anchored by automotive manufacturing. Stellantis (formerly Fiat Chrysler) operates the Windsor Assembly Plant, one of Canada's largest auto plants, and the city hosts an extensive supply chain of parts manufacturers and tool-and-die shops. The proposed NextStar Energy battery manufacturing plant (a Stellantis-LG Energy Solution joint venture) is scheduled to expand local employment substantially. Windsor's location at the U.S. border also supports cross-border logistics and a substantial healthcare sector at Windsor Regional Hospital.
The University of Windsor and St Clair College together enrol very large international student populations relative to the city's size. The University of Windsor's Odette School of Business and engineering programs draw students from across South Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. Many graduates apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit and later qualify for permanent residence through the Canadian Experience Class.
Immigration Services for Windsor Residents
Windsor's auto sector, post-secondary base, and Arab and South Asian communities shape the services we lead with for local clients.
Work Permits and LMIA Support. Stellantis suppliers, NextStar Energy, and the broader auto and skilled-trades sector regularly hire foreign workers under the Temporary Foreign Worker Program. We coordinate the Labour Market Impact Assessment with Service Canada, including recruitment requirements and supporting documentation, and prepare the resulting work permit applications. Per IRCC, the high-wage and low-wage streams have specific advertising rules.
Study Permits and PGWPs. International students at the University of Windsor or St Clair College need a valid study permit. Eligible graduates can apply for a PGWP. PGWP eligibility now depends on study program and field of study following IRCC's 2024 changes.
Spousal Sponsorship. Many Windsor families sponsor partners from Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, India, and the Philippines. Spousal sponsorship involves coordinated sponsor and applicant filings. Inland processing was approximately 12 months as of early 2025, per IRCC processing times.
Express Entry. The Express Entry system covers the Federal Skilled Worker, Canadian Experience Class, and Federal Skilled Trades programs. Windsor trade workers and engineers may benefit from category-based draws for trades or STEM, per IRCC.
Citizenship Applications. Permanent residents who meet the residency requirement of 1,095 days within five years can apply for Canadian citizenship.
Document Services. We also handle PR card renewal, permit replacement, notary services, and apostille services.
