Immigration in Hamilton: What You Need to Know

Hamilton sits at the western edge of the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area. The 2021 Census recorded a population of approximately 569,353, with about 25% of residents identifying as immigrants, per Statistics Canada.

Hamilton's immigrant profile has shifted in recent decades. The city was historically a destination for European immigrants, particularly from Italy, Portugal, and the former Yugoslavia. Today, the top source countries for recent immigrants are India, the Philippines, and China.

Steel and manufacturing remain central to Hamilton's economy. ArcelorMittal Dofasco and Stelco are among the city's largest private-sector employers. These companies and their suppliers regularly hire skilled tradespeople and production workers. When qualified Canadians are unavailable, employers turn to the Temporary Foreign Worker Program and need LMIA approvals before hiring abroad, per Employment and Social Development Canada.

Healthcare is Hamilton's other major employment pillar. Hamilton Health Sciences operates multiple hospital sites across the city, and St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton is another large employer. Foreign-trained nurses, technologists, and allied health professionals often need help with credential recognition alongside their immigration applications.

McMaster University draws thousands of international students each year. Graduate programs in engineering, health sciences, and business are particularly popular among applicants from South Asia and the Middle East [VERIFY: confirm top international source regions for McMaster]. Mohawk College also enrolls international students in applied trades, technology, and healthcare programs. These students often move from a study permit to a post-graduate work permit and later apply for permanent residence through the Canadian Experience Class.

Immigration Services for Hamilton Residents

Hamilton's industrial base shapes the mix of programs we handle most often for local clients. We lead with services that match the city's demographics and economy.

LMIA and Work Permits. Hamilton employers in steel manufacturing, construction, and food processing need foreign workers when no qualified Canadian applicant is available. The LMIA process requires the employer to demonstrate recruitment efforts and offer wages that meet or exceed the prevailing rate, per ESDC. Once the LMIA is approved, the worker applies for a work permit. We prepare both sides of the file.

Express Entry. Hamilton workers and international graduates who meet the criteria for the Federal Skilled Worker or Canadian Experience Class programs can apply for permanent residence through Express Entry. The system ranks candidates by their Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score. IRCC conducts regular draws and now runs category-based draws targeting specific occupations, per IRCC.

Spousal Sponsorship. Hamilton residents who are Canadian citizens or permanent residents can sponsor a spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner for permanent residence. The process requires detailed relationship evidence, shared financial records, and consistent documentation. Inland processing was approximately 23 months as of early 2026. Read more on our spousal sponsorship page.

Study Permits. International students accepted to McMaster University or Mohawk College need a valid study permit before arriving. The application requires a letter of acceptance, proof of funds, and in some cases a medical exam, per IRCC study permit requirements. Ontario study permit applications now require a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL).

Visitor Visas and Super Visas. Hamilton residents who want to bring parents or grandparents for an extended visit can apply for a Super Visa, which allows stays of up to five years per entry. For shorter visits, a standard temporary resident visa is appropriate.

Document Services. We also help Hamilton clients with PR card renewal, landing document replacement, replacing a lost citizenship certificate, notary services, and apostille services.

If your situation does not fit one of these categories, contact us.

How We Serve Clients in Hamilton

We use a virtual-first approach. Consultations take place over Zoom or Microsoft Teams, so Hamilton residents do not need to commute to Toronto for an appointment. This is particularly helpful for shift workers in steel plants and healthcare facilities.

When an in-person meeting is preferred, our downtown Toronto office at Suite 500, 123 Edward St is roughly 60 to 75 minutes from Hamilton via the QEW and Gardiner. Our North York office at 177 Linus Rd is approximately 70 to 85 minutes. GO Transit runs bus and train service between Hamilton GO Centre and Union Station, with connections to both office locations. Call 1-888-636-2122 toll-free. All fees are set in a written Legal Services Agreement, and the full schedule is on the legal fees page.
