Who is this service for

Citizenship services cover different needs. This page focuses on citizenship grant applications and related IRCC correspondence.

Permanent residents preparing a grant application

You believe you meet the citizenship requirements and want your physical presence, status, tax, language and identity records reviewed before an application is prepared.

People with complicated travel histories

Frequent travel, missing passport stamps, several passports or date differences across records make the physical presence calculation harder to confirm with confidence.

Applicants responding after submission

You received a return, document request, test notice or interview notice and want help understanding the letter and the work available under a new agreement.

Document issues we check before submission

Citizenship grant files rely on a consistent record of identity, status and travel. The national citizenship service page explains the existing service.

Travel dates that do not align

Passport stamps, travel history and physical presence entries should tell the same story. Uncertain departure or return dates need to be identified before filing.

Name or identity differences

Different spellings, transliterations or name changes across passports, permanent resident documents and civil records should be explained and supported with the right evidence.

The wrong citizenship route

A grant application, first proof of citizenship and replacement certificate solve different problems. Route confirmation prevents a document request from being sent through the wrong service.

Eligibility requirements at a glance

This table addresses an adult grant of citizenship, not proof of citizenship for someone who may already be Canadian. Minor applications use different statutory routes and should be assessed separately.

Basic Citizenship requirements
RequirementBasic requirement
Permanent resident statusThe applicant must have permanent resident status and must not have lost that status. An expired PR card does not by itself prevent an otherwise eligible person from applying.
Physical presenceThe applicant generally needs at least 1,095 days in Canada during the 5-year eligibility period, including at least 730 days as a permanent resident. Some earlier temporary-resident or protected-person time can count at one-half day, up to 365 days.
Income tax filingThe applicant may need to have filed Canadian income taxes for at least 3 years within the 5-year period, if required to file under tax law.
Language abilityApplicants aged 18 to 54 when they sign generally provide acceptable evidence of speaking and listening ability at CLB or NCLC level 4 or higher, unless an approved waiver applies.
Citizenship testApplicants aged 18 to 54 when they sign generally take the citizenship test, unless an approved waiver applies.
Prohibitions and oathThe applicant must not be prevented from becoming a citizen by an applicable prohibition. An approved adult applicant must take the oath of citizenship, subject to any approved waiver.

Citizenship Fees and Processing Times

These are government charges in Canadian dollars. Professional fees and other application costs are separate.

Citizenship government fees (CAD)
Government feeAmount (CAD)When it applies
Adult citizenship grant (18 and over)$653 CADIncludes the processing fee and the right of citizenship fee.
Minor citizenship grant (under 18)$100 CADProcessing fee for a minor application; minor eligibility is different from the adult criteria above.

A citizenship grant is different from a citizenship certificate application. The certificate or proof-of-citizenship fee is listed separately on the certificate page. Confirm current amounts on IRCC's fee list before payment.

Processing times

Use IRCC's current processing-time tool and select the applicable citizenship grant category. Published times are estimates for complete applications and can change as inventories and case circumstances change.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a Canadian citizenship application take to process?

IRCC's citizenship processing estimate changes, so there is no reliable fixed duration to quote for every application. Use the live processing-time tool and select a citizenship grant, not proof of citizenship. Completeness, background checks, test or interview needs and ceremony scheduling can affect an individual file, and the displayed time is an estimate rather than a guaranteed completion date.

How much is the processing fee for Canadian citizenship?

An adult citizenship grant currently costs $653 CAD in federal fees. That total comprises a $530 processing fee and a $123 right of citizenship fee. A minor grant is $100 CAD and follows different eligibility rules. Citizenship-certificate applications also use a different fee, so confirm that you selected the grant category before paying.

What are the 5 requirements to become a Canadian citizen?

For an adult grant, the five core requirements are permanent resident status and sufficient physical presence, required tax filing, language ability and the citizenship test. Adults generally need 1,095 days in Canada during the five-year eligibility period. Language proof and the test apply from ages 18 to 54. Applicable prohibitions must also be cleared, and approved adults take the oath.

What documents do I need for a Canadian citizenship application?

For an adult grant, follow the current IRCC document checklist for your filing method. Common items include passport or travel-document pages from the eligibility period, the physical-presence calculation, two identity documents and language proof for applicants aged 18 to 54. Paper applications also require citizenship photos and a fee receipt. Police certificates and translations apply only when the stated conditions are met.

Can I apply for citizenship after 2 years of PR?

Yes, potentially. You still need 1,095 days of physical presence in the five years before applying, including at least 730 days as a permanent resident. Eligible time in Canada before PR as a temporary resident or protected person counts as one-half day, to a maximum credit of 365 days. Use IRCC's calculator rather than relying on the PR-anniversary date alone.
